The open, vast mountain landscape with its long plateaus and gentle peaks invites top trips all year round.
The mountains in the Røros and Østerdalen region are suitable for climbing regardless of the season: in moss- and heather-covered attire during the summer, with beautiful contrasts – snow and slightly green bare branches in the spring, in colorful autumn attire, or with its magnetic white expanses in the winter. The feeling of having the mountain to yourself while gazing out over a landscape clearly shaped by harsh weather and climate is an experience you can't do without! If you make it to the top, a fantastic 360-degree panoramic view of the area awaits.
Do you want a quiet walk in the forest or mountains with lunch and coffee cooked over a campfire? Røros Guide accommodates your hiking desires. The tours mainly take place in the immediate vicinity of Røros town center and Femundsmarka/Flensmarka.
Length: approximately 21.4 km.
Duration: 9 hours round trip
Sølnkletten (1827 m above sea level) is Alvdal's highest peak and has several possible access variants.
However, most hikers drive into Sølndalen to Follandsvangen and take both Spisskletten and Store Sølnkletten on the same trip. Then you get the full package. But this is also the longest and hardest route, 8-10 hours.
Another good alternative is to drive to Dølbekken and Kvislå and walk from there. Follow the trail towards Breisjøsætra and head directly towards the summit from the south side of the mountain foot. Then you'll have a hike of 6-7 hours.
Length: 16.3 km
Duration: 6 hours one way
Østkjølen is a varied and exciting mountain ridge with occasionally fantastic views towards Tylldalen in the east and Glomdalsføret in the west and towards the mountains in all directions.
You start at Kvebergsvangan. The marked trail goes southeast on both sides of the pond on Høyåsen through mixed forest towards Raudfjellet. Raudfjellet and Hårsetvola offer both grand and idyllic experiences. At Gaupskardkampen, the trail continues down into Gaupskardet and up into Bellingan west of Måna.
From Måna, you can see the entire length of Tylldalen and southwards past Jutulhogget. The length of the hike can be adjusted according to weather and hiking form, but try to get east on the mountain ridge to experience the finest view.
Length: 3.2 km Duration: 2 hours One way
Sten is perhaps Alvdal's most visited peak. You can start from Steimosvingen or up at Steimoegga Sports Park. The trail starts where the light trail crosses the road, and it is well signposted.
After a short time, you cross the road to the residential areas and later the mountain road, and you are on your way up towards the top. Halfway up, you see the field of Steimoen Gard. The path flattens out a bit before you start on the really steep and long final slope towards the top.
When you're at the top, you'll surely feel that the effort was worth it. The view is phenomenal in all directions. In the north, you see the arch-rival Tynset, in the south Alvdal town center, in the west Alvdal west mountains, and in the east Trondfjellet (1666 m above sea level). The trip takes about two hours.
Length: 5.8 km
Duration: 3 hours, 30 minutes one way
Take off from Rv 28 about 4 km from the center of Os, at Halvmilenget. It is possible to drive up to the gate at Flatfjellet and then follow the trail Fjellvegen further towards the top of Gråhøgda. Parts of the trail are steep.
Fantastic views in all directions.
Length: 4.4 km
Duration: 2 hours one way
The hiking trail to Storenget goes through a unique, old grazing and mowing landscape up to the tree line. If you wish, you can extend the hike up to Synnerhogna (1210 meters above sea level). Synnerhogna is located within the Forollhogna National Park, therefore there is no marked trail above the tree line.
If you continue towards Synnerhogna, you will pass Myrengrabben in an open terrain with many large rocks where the terrain rises steeply. From the top of Synnerhogna, you have a wide view towards, among other things, Forollhogna, Rondane, Sølenkletten, Tron, and Elgpiggen.
Length: 5.3 km
Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes one way
From Nordervollia, you follow a good trail that runs along Litjdjupsjøbekken. The trail is easy to walk, and it doesn't take long before you reach the height southeast of the lake. There are good opportunities to find a resting place here, and maybe there's fish to catch in the lake. This trip is 4 km round trip. It is also an option to walk from Kvernhusvollvollen in Skarvdalen. The hike from here is somewhat longer, and there are some more altitude meters to overcome. Here, the trail goes through the grazing areas of the cube cabins from Skarvdalen, and it creates a special atmosphere to hear the cowbells on a summer day. In the forest band, it is not uncommon for a covey of ptarmigans to take off when you approach. This trip is 6 km round trip.
Length: 10.2 km
Duration: 6 hours one way
You can start the hike to Kvernskardet from Gjøsvika. Turn left after Femundveien, then right towards Skistuggu. There's a nice view over Begstaden Røros even before you reach Skistuggu. After passing Skistuggu, you enter the Norwegian Trekking Association's trail between Røros and Narjordet. On the east side of Kvernskaret, there's a trail post. Once you reach the top, you should enjoy the panoramic view, from Femunden in the east to Forolhogna in the west. The hike to Kvernskaret is approximately 10 km one way, and it's easy to walk on a good trail.
Length: 5.8 km
Duration: 4 hours one way
Vigelpiken is located in Feragsfjella, and you can see this peak from a good distance in the open mountain landscape. The summit is a good landmark to navigate by. We recommend the following route: Follow Rv31 to Aursundens Fjordarm Botnet. About a kilometer north of Botnvika camping, at Nedre Botnvollen, there's a farm road eastwards to Upper Botnvollen. Park at the gate. From there, the road continues eastwards towards Lake Tufsingen. From the height before Tufsingen, there's a marked trail with signs for Vigelpiken. The trail goes on the southwest side of Tufsingen. This is a dry and nice area, with a challenging ascent after passing Tufsingen. Vigelpiken can also be reached from Feragen, from the southwest.
Length: 4.5 km
Duration: 2 hours one way
A good afternoon hike in easy terrain.
Enarsvola is located 4 km (as the crow flies) northeast of Røros Hotel. There's a well-marked trail from the parking lot above the hotel, at Konstknektveien. The hike goes through open terrain with a nice view. When you reach the highest point of Enarsvola, you'll encounter the mountain church - a good place to catch your breath after the uphill climb. From the mountain church, you have a nice view, even though you haven't climbed particularly high. This is a nice afternoon hike for both adults and children.
Length: 7.1 km
Duration: 2 hours one way
Parking and start at Åsgårdvollen on Åsan. From here, there's a well-marked and cleared trail to the top. The terrain gradually ascends all the way, but it's easy and nice to walk, with mountain jogging terrain, weather permitting. A route that is excellent for both family outings and training trips.
The first part of the hike follows Gamle Trondheimsveg (Old Trondheim Road). Take off at the sign for Nonsvola, and continue following the trail through ascending forest terrain. When you emerge from the forest, it's a delight to see the summit on a sunny day, and the rest of the hike, you just enjoy the mountain nature. From the top, there's a great view over Vingelen and the majestic mountains on the horizon, which must be experienced on a clear and sunny day. This is also a great ski trip.
Length: 24.6 km
Duration: 3 hours, 30 minutes one way
This is the road the Caroleans took before Christmas in 1718 when they were going to the Mining Town to steal copper. It was a strenuous journey in snow and darkness. The trail starts at Tollefshagenvollen, 11-12 km northwest through Vingelen from the school and community center. From here, follow the tractor track for about 300 m. Keep to the left up Rabbenget. Behind Båvola, the trail veers off and crosses the Gjera River. It then passes Klimpen and Busjødalsrabban. The route briefly enters Forollhogna National Park in this area, where wild reindeer are often observed. Soon, the trail descends through the birch forest to the mountain farm settlement of Magnillsjøan. The route then continues northwest towards Trolltjønna, where there's a cabin on the north side that's always open. The trail then proceeds flatly into the valley, and soon you'll see Oddengrenda in Kvikne.
The trip can be divided by walking Magnillsjøan-Vingelen or Magnillsjøan-Kvikne.
Length: 3.8 km
Duration: 1 hour, 30 minutes round trip
There are several starting points for this trip. You can drive up Fjellvegen past Sumundshytta and to the end of the road at Tverrhøbua. From there, there's a clear trail northward/northwest around Tverrhøa. It's a dry and nice trail all the way with a straight course towards Bjørsjøkletten, about an hour's walk at a leisurely pace. If you want a more adventurous hike, you can choose the route from Bjørsjølia. Drive in to the mountain farms/cabins north of Bjørsjøen, to the right at the junction for Bjørsjøen rundt (around). Drive in to Vikevollen, and follow the trail past Falkrabbua up to Vesle Bjørsjøkletten. From there, the hike continues to Store Bjørsjøkletten. This is also a nice hike but somewhat steeper and longer than the previous option.
Length: 8.2 km round trip
This is a hike to the remains of a mining community that existed from 1904 to 1921. From the parking lot, head north until you reach the foundation ruins of buildings. Now you can see the massive remains of the laundry facility right up the hillside. Take a tour here and read the information on all the boards before heading towards the laundry. From here, there's a steep path through the forest and up to the bare mountain to the actual mine. One entrance is clearly visible. You can continue steeply up to Midthøa. There are several quarries into the mountain here. Now you also see westward to the area where the last ore was extracted. If you want to end here at Midthøa, you can head south-southeast. This will take you down to Gløtlisætra. From here, you can follow the mountain farm road. After a while, a poorer road steeply descends to the right. Follow this, and you will return to the parking lot.
Length: 13.7 km
Duration: 5 hours one way
From Tynset town center, drive towards Brydalen. When you reach the hills into Brydalskjølen, take the road to the right. If the barrier is closed, you must park nearby and walk from the county road.
When you reach the mountain farm settlement, turn left just after the first mountain farm, and follow the trail towards Lauvåskletten. When you reach the bare mountain, head south until you meet the marked trail of the Tourist Association. Follow this to the right over Bratthøa, past Tuftehaugen ski cabin, Skistua, and down to Haverslia ski stadium. You can retrieve the car later.
You quickly ascend to the bare mountain on this trip. You pass the clearly visible Lauvåskletten on your left, and a detour up there before continuing the trip is worth the effort.
Length: 8.4 km
Duration: 2 hours one way
You start at the parking lot by the ski resort, walk along the pedestrian path eastward until the trail branches off to the right towards the roller ski track, about 300 m. Then follow this to Sjølivegen, and walk northwest on this road for about 300 m, turn left, and follow the marked trail uphill through the forest. About halfway to the top, you reach the bare mountain. The area is quite dry. From the top, you get an incredible view over Savalsjøen.
