Fatbike and winter cycling
Winter in Røros and Østerdalen is quite fabulous, also when we welcome the cold temperatures og January. They creep down towards cold -24, but the landscape – is it really possible that it could be so beautiful? The trees are furry with rhyme, the sunlight is streaming towards us, the frost smoke is rising from the river and nature is so quiet
We are lucky to live in the middle of this winter landscape, and we would love to have visitors! For you who live here and you who come to visit - we have a recommendation to make. An activity that is not so common here in winter... We are talking about winter cycling.
The Røros Guide.
Nils Henning Øglænd runs Røros Guide and is an enthusiastic winter biker – on fatbike of course.
"What's so fun about cycling in the winter is that you get a completely different nature experience than what you can compare to in the summer. Since you don't follow the summer's beaten paths, but have access to multipurpose trails (used by mushers and others) that are run up in winter, you'll get to places where you're not normally. You are always over the tree line, with nice views and in the middle of the sunlight".
This winter, Røros Guide has four fatbikes for rent. Most of us should focus on guided tours, because even if you have a fatbike, it is not possible to ride in the loose snow. The experienced winter cyclist informs that you have to ride on a fixed deck.
"Either you have to be locally known to find the multipurpose trails that are run up, or you have to be with a guide," concludes Nils Henning Øglænd.
