Already in 1646, the first smelting hut was erected on Malmplassen, which became the center of the rapidly growing mining town of Røros, which became the center of the region. The mining town of Røros is one of Europe's oldest wooden house towns, and one of the few mining towns in the world to be listed on UNESCO's list of world heritage.
