RØROS IS CALLED “THE LOCAL FOOD CAPITAL” IN NORWAY
Like the people of Røros, the food of Røros is the real thing. The rich culinary tradition, both old and new, is a significant part of the experience for those visiting the mountain settlement. Animals have roamed over dale and glen. Fish have frolicked in cold, crystal clear waters. Mushrooms, berries and herbs are gathered in season.
The food tastes of the pure, the untouched – just like the nature from which it comes. You will discover this when you study the menu. Old traditions meet new impulses, noble culinary craft meets first class produce. Celebrate the food, the people, the nature.
Røros is one of Norway’s leading regions when it comes to locally produced food, thanks to the tremendous work carried out by Rørosmat in partnership with the travel industry and food industry.
Røros is called “the Local food capital” in Norway, and we are proud to have a diversity of organically produced products, of which many also have attained the Norwegian mark of speciality. Much of the agriculture in the region consists of organic production – leading to better retention of the cultural landscape. Even berries picked in Røros region have organic approval.
HISTORY
Røros town is one of the few mining towns in the world that has been found worthy of a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Røros was awarded a place on the list as early as in 1980. The town centre boasts a rare collection of large and well-preserved wooden buildings, made all the more real and authentic by the fact that people still live and work inside them.
LOCAL FOOD SAFARI
A food guide will take you on an exciting trip through our local food history.
You will experience the genuine tastes of the Røros region, whilst visiting producers of food on farms and at restaurants. You’ll have ample opportunity to taste what’s on offer at a local lunch with coffee and pastries or ice cream. There are many different kinds of safaris to choose from in the region:
* Aursunden local food Safari – 5-hour trip
* Visit to the Røros Dairy and a farm with animals – 2.5-hour trip.
* Walking tour of Bergstaden Røros – with beer tasting – 2,5 hours
SLEIGH RIDES
It’s almost like a dream – a horse and sleigh ride in torch light through Røros’ narrow and snow-covered streets. You sit snugly under a sheepskin rug as the sound of sleigh bells echoes around you. A magical experience!
SOUTH SAMI FAMILY
The Nordfjell family are a south Sami family who daily have their work as reindeer herders in the Røros area, just a short walking distance from the centre of Røros. Their work with reindeer is based on traditions that go back many generations here in the Røros area, and they want to share some of their special tradition with you when you’re visiting Røros. You can watch the reindeers up close, try a reindeer sled tour or pet and feed them. They will convey some of the southern Sami culture by telling about the Sami in this area before and now.
The traditions are old, but it has been natural to adapt, and adopt modern technology as it becomes. Our traditional gåetie has an open fire in the center and is the kind of dwelling South Sami people used to build in forest areas. We can sit around the fire on warm reindeer-skins, drink fresh coffee and reindeer-broth and perhaps taste some salted, dried reindeer meat.
A TRIP BY HORSE AND SLEIGH TO VOLLDALSKOJA FOR DINNER
In the midst of the fells between Norway and Sweden, right in the middle of the forest, we find Volldalskoja. We reach it by horse and sleigh the last part of the trip.
This is an old, traditional structure, with wooden interior and no electricity – everything is cooked over open fire and the lighting inside is also done with the help of the fireplace and candles all around. A truly magical atmosphere where you can really relax and sit back and enjoy the traditional dishes made from local ingredients.
Tuck yourself into the skin rug and join us on a trip through the forest. Off we go for a traditional torchlight trip by horse and sleigh or buggy along the ancient trading tracks through the forest to Volldalskoja. Inside the log cabin you will be welcomed with a glass of warm toddy, after which you are invited to sit around the open fire, where you will be served a three-course meal of traditional mountain fare, rounded off with coffee from the “black kettle”.
A folk singer will entertain us and invite us to join in his songs, before the horses bring us back to the hotel.
