Are the buddies ready for a challenge? How about a long weekend skiing where you cross untouched wilderness, enjoy the view from Storviglen itself and end the trip with beer tasting and well-deserved luxury? Here is a mini expedition where you get to try your strength against nature. Take the trip over two to three days, depending on the shape and conditions.
A ski trip from Synnervika at the northern end of Femunden to Vauldalen is a particularly great experience where you really get to try some demanding altitude meters. Storviglen is Røros' highest mountain at 1561 meters above sea level, and this is a mini expedition that requires you to be familiar with mountain skiing and be in good shape.
During the winter months you will arrive at Synnervika by car within half an hour. Here you can strap on your skis in the parking lot and either walk on the ice around Neset and into Nordvika or you can follow the dog trail and scooter tracks through the forest, via Lergruvtjønnan. Follow the ice inland at Nordvika. Here there are often scooter tracks that are good to follow.
At the head of Nordvika, where the log chutes begin, is Lorthølbua. This is an open arch operated by Statskog. Here there is firewood and brisker for those who want to spend the night. The trip to Lorthølbua takes just over an hour. Follow the track north and head for Ljøsnåvollen, an idyllic old farm. The farm is closed during the winter months, but in the summer it is serviced with accommodation and dining.
This is where the really demanding part of the expedition begins. Depending on the weather and shape, it is recommended to establish a camp near Ljøsnavollen. Be sure to replenish your energy and get a good night's sleep in the tent before you start the next stage with new strength the next day.
From Ljøsnavollen you follow the marked year-round route. From here it is approx. 8.5 kilometers up to the top of Storviglen, and you will climb 950 meters. This day you get a demanding trip, not least with a sled or backpack. Just before you reach 1300 meters above sea level, the route goes straight up the flank and slightly to the right of the top. Gradually turn east and follow the small depression upwards. From here it is important to follow the terrain and the best snow up to the ridge. Follow the ridge 250 meters to the left and up to the top.
From the top you have a fantastic view of Femundsmarka in the south, Sylan in the north and far into Sweden.
Note: Be aware of slides, especially during and after high winds and snowy weather. On the south side, this applies especially where the route runs along Ljøså between 1000 and 1100 meters above sea level.
From Storvigeln you get a nice descent to Borgedalsbua, which is located about five kilometers due north. Borgedalsbua is private, but a nice place to take a rest in the shelter of the walls of the open landscape. From Borgedalsbua there are ski tracks all the way to Vauldalen through slaughter and open terrain. Now you just have to enjoy the trip knowing that the reward for the struggel is just around the corner.
Vauldalen mountain Hotel has been run by the same family for almost 100 years. Here you can stay and be served real homemade local food. Good for hungry guys after the trip! You can also choose to stay in the historic Skottgården, which dates back hundreds of years. Remember to book your accommodation!
From Vauldalen, the car ride to Røros takes only 40 minutes. Treat yourselves to a day of well-being in the mining town. Here you can stay luxuriously at one of the city's two good hotels, in the spa and wellness department at Røros Hotel you can soften sore and tired muscles and then order a beer tasting in the old barn of Bergstadens Hotel. Enjoy a juicy burger at Skanckebua or a dinner at Grillhuset.
