Children love visiting farms!
Have you ever spent a whole day with the children at a pleasure park, then dropped by a farm to pet the chicks and lambs – only to discover that it was contact with the animals that made the biggest impression of the day?
The happiness of visiting a farm with children can give memories for life. Therefore, we have created a route in the Røros region where the whole family can enjoy a farm visit. The kids can make friends with the animals while the adults taste delicious locally grown food. Preferably in peace and quiet.
Søberg Farm is situated on the Riksveg 3 at Alvdal. The special shopping ambience starts when you arrive and enter the Cave of Lights (Lysgrotto) filled with handcrafted candles. The stabbur (a traditional food storage hut) is brim full of local produce. The proprietors themselves make sausage of cured lamb and mutton. On this farm you will find storytellers, bearers of culture and creators of atmosphere. Let the children play outside with the lambs or buy the world’s best local ice cream.
If the whole family is looking for an adventure, you can’t do better than Jutulhogget Canyon – one of North Europe’s largest gorges. With a length of 2,4 km and a depth of 140 metres, this natural wonder will be an exciting experience for all.
Breisjøseter is situated in the middle of Alvdal Vestfjell, a mountainous area between Rondane and Østerdalen. Here the family can fish, paddle, row or enjoy hikes to Storsølnkletten, Korsberghytta or to Storgrytdalseter. People on ut.no chose Breisjøseter as ‘the most fun tourist cabin for children’.
At Savalen Horse Center you can all go for a mighty scenery from horseback in the varied and beautiful forests and mountains and at Utistuvollen you can have a unique sleepover experience for the whole family. Stay on a working summer pasture dairy farm, complete with cattle and milkmaid.
Ljøsnåvollen summer pasture farm, or seter, is situated at the entrance to Femundsmarka national park and was built at the end of the 1600s. Here, you can overnight in simple cabins, the children can meet the animals and your hosts will serve traditional seter food. Many like to add to the experience by driving to Feragen and cycling the 12 km from here to the idyllic farm. If you are staying for a couple of days, we recommend a 3-4 hike from Ljøsnåvollen up Storviglen (1 561 MASL). The seter is marked on Den Norske Turistforening’s map (dnt.no), where you will find many other great hiking suggestions. Contact Ljøsnåvollen for booking accommodation or food.
In Brekken, there is an ancient farm ound by Vauldalen Mountainhotel, called Skottgården, which is even older than the mines at Røros! This old travellers’ lodge has eight buildings and is steeped in history and atmosphere in every turn. Skottgården serves delicious food, and your host will tell you how the traditional foods came about. They keep horses here, so you can hire a tour by horse and carriage – or perhaps even help out in the stables?
Enjoy food, animals and happy kids this summer!
