It’s not every day that local traditions earn a spot alongside the pyramids or the Taj Mahal. But now it`s official: Norway’s mountain farming (seterkultur) and traditional folk costumes (bunad) have been added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Life on the Summer Farm
In our region, mountain farming has never been just a job – it’s been a way of life. For generations, families have taken their livestock up to the summer pastures, called seter, where they make cheese and butter the old-fashioned way. But this is about more than food – it’s about living in harmony with nature, preserving open landscapes, and passing on traditions.
Today, many active seter farms welcome visitors to experience this slower, sustainable way of life. You can hear the sound of cowbells, taste fresh dairy, and feel a deep connection to the land. The UNESCO recognition reminds us that sustainability and tradition truly go hand in hand.

Bunad – A Story You Can Wear
A bunad is more than a festive outfit – it’s wearable history, sewn with pride. From the iconic Røros costume to the colorful Nord-Østerdal styles and local variations, every stitch and embroidery tells a story about where we come from and who we are. Bunads are worn during life’s most meaningful moments – from confirmations and weddings to national holidays and local celebrations. And now, this living tradition has earned a well-deserved place on the world’s cultural stage.
