Welcome to the Røros region, a journey in time!
Hear the story behind this charming wooden town and about the people who lived here, while you’re in the middle of the well-preserved world heritage town of Røros. The guided walk from the Røros Museum takes you on a journey back in time; to the start of The Røros Copper Company, to the flourishing of the mining town of Røros and to the everyday life of the locals.
Previous generations have paved the way in dark mine tunnels for the history of the world heritage site Røros. It’s a unique experience to join a guided tour that begins in the year 1650 in Nyberget mine, ending up in 1972’s Olav mine – this one continuing for 219 more years after the first one being closed down. The tour takes you through 500 meters of tunnels into the mountain and 50 meters into the depths.
The Røros region is the country’s local food capital and is based on traditions. The low temperature and the barren landscape in the region result in local food products that are rich in flavor. At Vertshuset Røros you’ll be served local specialties with a modern twist. A perfect end to an exciting day in the world heritage.
Take a trip to the historic farm Søberg Gård in Alvdal, and experience a journey back in time in the old barn! The farm has roots dating back to 1925 and the farm’s barn has been decorated as was common in times gone by, with many varieties of local food and brews from the region.
The old manure cellar on the farm has been converted into a light cave, and here you can join a light experience out of the ordinary! The old basement is filled with candles in all sizes, colours and shapes. Perfect for decorating a romantic table filled with the local goodies that are to be found in the barn.
In historical surroundings, close to Malmplassen and the Røros museum, you will find the intimate gallery Kunst og kaos (“Art and Chaos”). They are located in Finborudgården, Mørkstugata 3 in Røros. A house with a history from the late 17th century. The building has been restored and contains this cozy gallery! With a passion for art and activities, this gallery fills the historic building with exhibitions by contemporary Norwegian artists. They also offer guided art tours or you can experience the gallery all by yourself, with the owners as engaging hosts, full of knowledge and passion for art.
The gallery in Kjerkgata 2, Røros Kunstformidling, is definitely worth a visit when you visit our small strange town. You will find Central Norway's largest gallery in the heart of Bergstaden, Røros. This gallery offers Norway's most famous artists, but they also present a rich selection of local and Norwegian contemporary artists.
You can also find typical products from the Røros region, such as Røros Tweed wool blankets and pillows, reindeer skins from Stensaas Reinsdyrslakteri and genuine Norwegian sheepskin from Myrvangen farm.
