Destination Røros, Norway won yet another prestigious award when they received the Tourism for Tomorrow Award for Destination Stewardship at the World Travel & Tourism Councils (WTTC) Awards celebration in Tokyo in 2012.

Every year the industry leader World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) rewards the very best in sustainable tourism with the globally renowned Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, which are among of the very highest accolades in the global travel & tourism industry. The Awards aim to give international recognition to best practice examples of sustainable tourism in action.
There are four award categories; Global Tourism Business Award, Conservation Award, Community Benefit Award and Destination Stewardship Award. The other finalists for Destination Stewardship were Misool Eco Resort, Indonesia and Tanabe City, Japan. There were a total of 150 applications from 60 countries for this years awards, narrowed down to 12 finalists across 4 categories.
The jury says that Destination Røros has shown dedication to multi-stakeholder engagement and success in maintaining a programme of sustainable tourism management, incorporating social, cultural, environmental and economic aspects.
Destination Røros has worked with an extensive knowledge- and service educational program, sustainable waste handling, environmental policy and environmental certification. The organisation works according to a sustainability policy and also offers a sustainable business development programme to its members.
