Something happens to us Norwegians the moment the clocks go forward to Summer Time, and we get that extra hour of sunshine. Our sad, dark winter faces are exchanged for big smiles and there is nothing we would rather do than spend hours on end out of doors.
We have prepared a list of our favourite outdoor activities in the region, with something for everyone.
Femundsmarka National Park is one of the largest continuous areas of untouched wilderness in Southern Scandinavia. During the summer months, the historic boat, M/S Fæmund II, will transport you past vistas of natural beauty along the banks of the ‘inland sea’ of Femunden. Extend your tour into the National Park on foot or by bike.
Tip: Let MS Fæmund II carry you on an unforgettable boat trip over the Femund Lake, with stops along the way for you to experience the national park. Pack a picnic and a thermos in your rucksack and set off to explore the park on your own.
The open mountain landscape with its broad expanses and gentle peaks presents a year-round temptation to hill walkers. It promises the unmissable feeling of having the mountain entirely to yourself as you gaze across a countryside clearly marked by the harsh climate. And if you make it to the top, your reward is a fantastic 360° panoramic view of the whole area.
Tip: Venture out on one of the region’s most popular mountain tours. Discover hidden pearls along the way in the company of a local guide.
Røros and Østerdalen covers the entire region, an area criss-crossed by excellent cycle trails. These consist of ancient thoroughfares, farm roads, quiet back roads, gravel tracks and well-worn foot paths.
Tip: Røros Guide has a list of guided foot tours and bike excursions to help you experience the best of Røros, or you can hire a cycle and explore the region on you own, if you prefer.
The region is full of idyllic farmsteads dating from 1600 to 1900. Many have a history connected to mining or to traditional farming, while others have been used as vicarages.
Tip: Take the family to meet the animals at Dølmotunet or visit the historic houses of Husantunet.
Summer would not be summer without at least a dip into the lake, whatever the temperature! Røros region and Østerdalen is full of diverse outdoor bathing possibilities, so remember to pack your swimming costume.
Tip: We have prepared a little overview of the locals’ favourite bathing spots. If you would nevertheless prefer to do your outdoor swimming in a pool, there is always Røros Bad & Velvære and the brand new SPA at Bergstadens Hotel.
Røros region is simple bursting with local food producers – providing everything from meat and dairy to herbs and potatoes. There are treats for the taste buds everywhere you turn.
Tip: Join one of our local food safaris in Røros town centre. If you are travelling along Riksveg 3, we recommend that you visit Søberg Gård, which sells a selection of local food. Check out Kalsa Farm Bakery and Galåvolden Farm, too.
At Doktortjønna Recreation Park, the youngest in the family can enjoy outdoor activities referring to Femundsmarka National Park. Experience the region’s natural history through a visit to one of our many national parks and nature reserves. Did you know that Norway’s rarest plant grows at Sakrisodden on the banks of Aursunden? Or that there are some 12 varieties of orchid to be found at Sølendet?
Tip: Observe the rare Sibirstjerna at Sakrisodden or see the different varieties of orchid at Sølendet. Lace up your walking boots and explore Forollhogna national park or Femundsmarka national park.
