The Freedom to Roam: Norway's Right to Access Nature

One of the most unique things about hiking in Norway is the freedom you have to explore.

Thanks to the traditional concept of allemannsretten (the Right to Roam), you are free to walk almost everywhere in nature–even on privately owned land. But you need to know the difference between cultivated land and uncultivated land. In simple terms, cultivated land is a land such as farm yards, residential and domestic sites, gardens, industrial estates, tilled fields and similar areas where public access would inconvenience the landowner. Uncultivated land is all land which is not cultivated, and includes most woods and forests, mountains, marslands and beaches.

This means you can:

Hike freely in forests and mountains
Camp in the wild (at least 150 meters from the nearest house of cabin)
Pick berries and mushrooms

With this freedom comes responsibility. Respect nature, leave no trace, and help preserve these landscapes for future generations.

Respect Wildlife and Grazing Animals

Nature in our region is not just beautiful– it's alive.

While hiking, you may encounter wildlife such as moose, reindeer, birds and smaller animals. You may also come across grazing livestock like sheep and cattle during summer.

To keep both yourself and the animals safe, keep a safe distance from all animals, always close gates behind you, keep dogs on a leash and do not feed animals. Remember, you are a guest in their home.
