About Johan Falkberget

Johan Falkberget (1879–1967) grew up in Rugldalen, north of Røros. His literature is deeply connected to the history of Røros, the surrounding region, and the Røros Copper Works.

As a young writer, Falkberget published short stories and poems in the local Røros newspaper Fjeld-Ljom. From 1905, he worked as a journalist, which took him to Ålesund, Fredrikstad, and Oslo. In 1922, he moved back to Rugldalen. By then, he had published the comedy Bør Børson Jr. (1920) and was already a well-known and respected writer. With the release of the novel Den fjerde nattevakt (The Fourth Night Watch) in 1923, Falkberget gained major recognition as an author. He later wrote two extensive historical novel series: Christianus Sextus (1927) and Nattens Brød (Bread of the Night, 1940).

Ratvolden

Johan Falkberget was born and raised on the Falkberget farm in Rugldalen. After returning to his home valley in 1922, he built the Ratvolden farm just 600 meters from Falkberget. Through his novels and poems, Falkberget portrayed the relationship between people, their living conditions, and nature in the Røros area during the copper mining era.
