At the peak of summer, the days are long and dry, the nights are light, the meadows are green, and the countryside simply bursts with life.
For the space of a few wonderful weeks, time on the mountain seems to stand still, each day rolling into the next. The sun moving across the sky bathes us in the light and warmth we have longed for on dark winter days.
Have you been missing summer in the Røros region? Breathe in the scent of dry heather, fresh mountain birch and sun-scorched fir cones. Feel the gentle breeze stroking your face, the grass brushing against your legs and fresh raindrops landing on the tip of your nose. Hear the wary trout in the mountain lake and the fluttering wings of the grouse rising from the thicket.
Here are some of the outdoor activities we are most looking forward to this summer.
Summer equals Adventures! A day or a week in the country guarantees unforgettable experiences and a fulfilling sense of achievement for all ages. The Røros region is littered with exciting finds, and the moorland landscape is an eldorado for adventurers. In the national parks of Femundsmarka and Forollhogna, you can follow designated trails for days on end or you can map out your own peaceful paradise off the beaten track.
Femundsmarka National Park is easily accessible, just half an hour by bus or car to Synnervika, at the north end of the huge lake, Femunden. From here you can either hike on the country trails or you can treat yourself to a little cruise on M/S Fæmund II and sail right into the heart of the fairytale. M/S Fæmund calls at five stops on the east side and three on the west side of the lake.
Femundsmarka has had national park status for half a century. The twisted pines, fishing lakes, streams and watercourses, are an invitation to rambling, fishing and paddling excursions in the gentle rolling countryside. Troll-size trout and char entice you from the deep; large pike bask motionless in the reeds. Femundsmarka comprises both wilderness and culture landscape. There are small cabins where you are welcome to spend the night, and you may come across the remains of charcoal burning, smelting sheds and timber gutters originally used for log floating. People, culture, and nature go hand in hand throughout the region.
Which do you fancy? Slowly drifting along with the current, relaxing as you enjoy the view from your canoe – or active paddling, tackling various challenges along the way? Both, did you say? Here are two tours that will leave an impression on experienced paddlers and new beginners alike.
You can actually paddle all the way from Femunden to Røros, starting in the bay of Nordvika, at the north end of Femunden. From here you paddle along a timber gutter to the public cabin of Lorthølbua. Two more timber gutters lead you to Litjrennbua cabin. These gutters can be tricky to navigate, and many people prefer to drag their canoe over land by rope. You can overnight in a cabin or continue the trip to Feragshåen and further until you get to Røros. Most people take 2-4 days on these tours, so a tent or hammock can be useful.
Follow the River Glomma from Glåmos to Røros for a gentle – though never dull – canoeing excursion, suitable for the whole family. This is a relaxing trip, as the current will help you on your way and you can simply lean back and enjoy the splendid countryside. Fish here are keen to take the bait, so try trailing a wobbler or a spinner after the canoe. With any luck, you’ll have fresh trout or grayling sizzling in your pan for dinner! Remember to buy a fishing permit. Why not pack a tent and set up camp, on the west side of the river? Canoes must be carried a short way past the hydropower plant. This is the perfect tour for a family, as you can leave the car at Glåmos and paddle down river to Røros for sightseeing or a slap-up meal. Røros offers excellent local food specialities for all tastes . Afterwards, it is easy and practical to get a bus or train back to your car/starting point again. You can hire a canoe at Røros Guide and they both drive out the canoe and collect it afterwards.
Many people prefer to experience Norway – and the Røros region – by car. It gives the freedom to stop whenever you come across something that seems picturesque or exciting. The Røros region is full of possibilities for those who appreciate the freedom of a camping holiday. You can live the good life and fill your days with the experiences of your choice. Osensjøen Camping, Langoden Gård and Røste Hyttetun & Camping are great locations for bathing, fishing, swimming and discovering the area’s many attractions. You will find this and other accomodation in the Røros region here.
Did you know, there is a designated cycle path all the way from Alvdal to Røros. You decide for yourself, of course, whether to cycle or walk. Either way, you are guaranteed a fantastic experience and some wonderful views. Follow the signs and enjoy the serenity of the lovely countryside for 160 km in easy terrain, passing through no fewer than six municipalities. You can cycle the whole corridor or divide it up into smaller day portions.
Whether you are walking or pedalling you will be surrounded by a beautiful cultural landscape of welcoming mountains, lakes, rivers and streams. Take a break at one of the many small mountain dairy farms where you can sample local food. There are many friendly places for overnighting, too.
North-Østerdalen has a long tradition of summer mountain dairy farms and is one of the few places in the country where these are still in active use. The cows wander freely in the mountain pastures during the day and return to the farm in the afternoon for milking. A unique sleepover experience for the whole family is Utistuvollen. Her you can stay on a working summer pasture dairy farm and you can assist with milking and with cowshed duties.
After camping in the country for a few days, it feels nothing short of luxurious to check in to a comfortable, modern hotel. Bergstaden Hotel is situated in the centre of Røros, with immediate access to Kjerkgata and everything the little mining town has to offer. The hotel has single rooms as well as suites, SPA and gym facilities, restaurants and bars. A little higher up, overlooking the town, is Røros Hotel. There is walking terrain right outside and, when you come back, you can relax in the spa or the children can have fun on the climbing wall in the swimming pool.
Vauldalen Fjellhotell on the edge of the moor, has large and small self-catering apartments. You will be very well taken care of with a friendly, personal touch. The food is good, homemade traditional fare, you will be in close contact with horses and have fantastic mountain terrain on your doorstep.
